The way in which an organisation collects, arranges, shares and reviews its internal knowledge in terms of resources, documentation and people skills is called knowledge management (KM). Information management systems support organisational memory and knowledge mobilisation. Therefore effective use of information management systems can help enable successful KM in organisations.

  • Our intelligent systems, where using ARK’s Smart Information SystemTM, Mott MacDonald and ARK e-management have teamed up to deliver customers with an “intelligent system” for managing their business information. It is simple to use, fast and efficient, mobile, secure, enables measurement and uses browser technology. It enables the access of several legacy information repositories from one application, in a controlled way to enable efficiency across the organisation.   • Our extranet services, where Mott MacDonald has teamed up with 4Projects, to provide our geographically dispersed customers and teams with a central information repository for documents, discussions, drawings and tenders, etc., which provides an auditable structure for large quantities of information. The 4Projects extranet provides a reliable, secure internet environment in which to communicate project Information. Knowledge management
At Mott MacDonald we appreciate that business information represents the memory of an organisation and KM systems and processes enable the storage and mobilisation of this knowledge. We have developed an approach to KM that delivers dedicated KM systems and processes that are supported by appropriate formal business processes, procedures, policies and organisational culture.

We engage stakeholders early in the process and manage their involvement to understand the state of the organisation’s knowledge and the cultural environment that exists in relation to KM. Through this we are able to identify the associated issues and how they can be addressed. We have found engaging large numbers of employees from different backgrounds and different levels of seniority (horizontal and vertical slices), provide an opportunity to initiate the change in culture necessary to sustain the effective management of knowledge within the organisation.

For KM we design ‘people solutions’ supported by information management systems to better develop and mobilise the organisation’s collective knowledge.

We use the stakeholder engagement to confirm the KM requirements and help design the new KM systems and processes to address them. We also help design the business support processes, procedures, policies and KM culture which is to become embedded in the organisation.
