MATTISSE enables public access to real-time traffic and travel
information, via an innovative traveller information service, on
one of Britain’s busiest transport networks. It is also a real-time
management system for the urban and inter-urban transport network
in Birmingham and the West Midlands.
The Midlands – at the heart of the UK’s road and rail network –
incorporates the country’s largest conurbation outside London and
suffers from some of the worst traffic congestion in Britain.
MATTISSE – designed, developed and now supported by Mott MacDonald
as part of its joint venture with Marconi – has been in use since
1998 as a real-time management system for the urban and inter-urban
transport network in the West Midlands and Leicestershire.
Initially, the delivery of real-time traffic and travel information
was confined to value added service providers but now two services
are available to the public – the Help2Travel website and
information kiosk and public screen displays in public realm areas.
Information on Birmingham’s road and rail conditions are among the
most popular pages on the website.
The flexible internet-based solution was developed allowing
MATTISSE information to be disseminated to information kiosks, and
real time information is now displayed on 22 interactive kiosks in
the new Bullring retail centre. CCTV images from Birmingham City
Council’s UTC have also been integrated with MATTISSE, and are
available to all other MATTISSE Client users, including other Local
Authority UTCs.
